Steve Cavey

State Representative • 6th Norfolk District

Avon • Canton • Stoughton

A practical, steady voice focused on schools, local government, and getting real work done.

Why I’m Running

I’m running for State Representative because too often the work that actually matters - funding schools, supporting local government, planning responsibly, and maintaining public trust - gets lost in political theater.

I currently serve as the Chairperson on the Stoughton Select Board. As Chairperson, I work on budgets, contracts, labor relations, grants, municipal procurement, long-term planning, and conflict resolution. Everyday I experience the way state decisions affect our towns, and how difficult it is for local officials to plan when funding is uncertain, rules change without warning, state policies are not funded, or transparency is lacking.

I’m not interested in performative politics.

If elected to the people’s House of Representatives, I am committed to doing the people’s work - carefully, seriously, transparently, and honestly.

My Priorities

1. Schools & Local Government Support

Strong communities start with strong local institutions.

I will advocate for:
    • Reliable Chapter 70 school funding
    • Predictable, fair local aid for towns
    • Support for municipal infrastructure, including water, sewers, roads, public buildings, and public safety facilities
    • Long-term planning to mitigate stress on the local budgeting process

State government should be a partner with cities and towns - not an obstacle. As your State Representative, I will leverage the enormous resources of state government to the benefit of Avon, Canton, and Stoughton.

2. Financial Responsibility

As a town Selectperson, I’ve learned first-hand that fiscal responsibility isn’t just a slogan - it’s a discipline.

That means:
    • Applying proven best practices
    • Transparent budgeting
    • Honest accounting
    • Long-term thinking about costs and commitments
    • Respect for taxpayers

I’ve proven my experience with municipal budgets and audits. I genuinely believe responsible spending builds community trust and stability.

3. Senior Housing and Tax Relief

Many seniors wish to stay in their homes and in their communities. However, in many cases rising state and local property taxes makes that dream impossible.

As your State Representative, I will focus on:
    • Legislating tax relief for our seniors and veterans
    • Expanding senior housing options
    • Supporting local housing solutions that respect neighborhood character
    • Coordinating state resources with municipal planning

Our communities should support people at every stage of life. I will work with the local governments of Avon, Canton, and Stoughton to create housing opportunities.

4. Representation That Focuses on Doing the Work

Politics today has become highly performative. That’s not what this job is supposed to be.

I believe:
    • Listening matters more than talking
    • Results matter more than press releases
    • Showing up matters more than posturing
    • Productive collaboration matters more than divisiveness and showmanship

As your State Representative, I’ll focus on doing the work of the 6th Norfolk District - consistently, respectfully, and without nonsense.

5. Government Transparency & Accountability

Trust in government depends on the openness and accountability of your government’s leaders.

Recent discussions around auditing the Legislature reflect a broader concern many residents share: people want to know how decisions are made, how taxpayer money is spent, and whether the government is holding itself to the same standards it expects of others.

I support:
    • Clear, accessible financial reporting
    • Meaningful oversight and accountability
    • Transparency that builds public confidence - not political advantage

We should expect government integrity in every form and every action. It’s about letting people see how decisions are made and how public funds are spent.

Avon, Canton, and Stoughton have been well served by Representative Bill Gavin for many decades. He has represented the residents of the 6th Norfolk District with distinction, honor, and effectiveness. It would be my privilege to use my education and experience in both the private and public sectors to serve the district and carry on his legacy.

Serving the Entire District

This campaign is about the citizens of Avon, Canton, and Stoughton.

Each town is different, but the challenges are shared:
    • Schools that need stable operational and capital funding
    • Infrastructure that requires state investments
    • Seniors who want to stay in their communities
    • A desire for representation that focuses on state funding, not spectacle
    • A government people can understand and trust and a representative with a passion for constituent service

If elected, I will be accessible, responsive, and focused on the needs of the 6th Norfolk District - not the distractions of politics.
